Herman Gorter

Herman Gorter, born on November twenty-sixth, eighteen sixty-four, was a prominent Dutch poet, classical scholar, and communist theorist. He emerged as a leading figure of the Tachtigers, a significant literary movement in the Netherlands, and gained acclaim for his lyrical epic, Mei, published in eighteen eighty-nine. His literary prowess positioned him among the most celebrated poets of his generation.

In eighteen ninety-seven, Gorter transitioned into a committed Marxist, becoming a vocal advocate within the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP). He was instrumental in the left-wing Marxist opposition and played a pivotal role in the formation of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) following the Tribunist schism in nineteen oh nine. His political journey was marked by a staunch opposition to the First World War, aligning himself with the Zimmerwald Left and supporting the revolutionary movements in Russia.

After the war, Gorter became a key figure in the German communist left, particularly within the Communist Workers' Party of Germany (KAPD). In nineteen twenty, he authored the influential Open Letter to Comrade Lenin, critiquing the Communist International's shift towards parliamentary and trade union strategies. This work became a foundational text for left communism and underscored his commitment to revolutionary principles.

In nineteen twenty-one, Gorter was a primary force behind the establishment of the Communist Workers' International (KAI). Throughout his later years, he dedicated himself to uniting the fragmented left-communist movement, continuing his advocacy for revolutionary change until his passing in nineteen twenty-seven.
