Herman Snellen

Herman Snellen, born on February nineteenth, eighteen thirty-four, was a prominent Dutch physician and ophthalmologist renowned for his contributions to the field of visual acuity. In eighteen sixty-two, he introduced the Snellen chart, a revolutionary tool that transformed the way vision was assessed and studied.

His expertise and dedication led him to take over the directorship of the Netherlands Hospital for Eye Patients, known as the Nederlandsch Gasthuis voor Ooglijders, succeeding the esteemed Franciscus Donders. Under his leadership, the hospital continued to advance in the treatment and understanding of eye diseases.

In recognition of his significant contributions to ophthalmology, Snellen was elected as an International Member of the American Philosophical Society in eighteen ninety-four, highlighting his influence and respect within the scientific community.
