Hermann Billung

Hermann Billung was a distinguished nobleman from Saxony, serving as a military commander and count in the East Frankish Kingdom during the reign of King Otto I from nine hundred thirty-six to nine hundred seventy-three. His role as the royal governor of the Duchy of Saxony was pivotal, particularly in the defense of the eastern regions against the incursions of the Polabian Slavs.

As the founder of the House of Billung, Hermann played a significant part in shaping the medieval history of northern German territories. His military leadership and strategic initiatives were crucial in safeguarding Saxon borders, although later interpretations of his title sometimes inaccurately suggested he held the position of Duke of Saxony.

While earlier historians posited that Hermann's military efforts led to the establishment of a northeastern march, known as the Billung March, contemporary scholarship has revealed that these claims lack substantiation in reliable primary sources. It is now understood that Hermann never attained the title of duke, nor was there an effective frontier province in the Slavic regions during his time.
