Hernán Cortés

Hernán Cortés, born in 1485 in Medellín, Spain, emerged from a family of lesser nobility, driven by a thirst for adventure and wealth in the New World. His journey began in Hispaniola and later took him to Cuba, where he briefly served as alcalde in one of the island's earliest Spanish settlements. Cortés's ambitions led him to fund and captain the third expedition to the mainland in 1519, despite facing opposition from the governor of Cuba, Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, who sought to recall him.

Upon arriving on the continent, Cortés skillfully navigated the complex political landscape by forming alliances with various indigenous groups. His strategic use of Doña Marina, a native woman who served as his interpreter, proved invaluable. Their relationship also resulted in the birth of his first son. When emissaries from the governor attempted to arrest him, Cortés successfully defended his position, turning the situation to his advantage by incorporating the additional troops into his ranks.

Through a combination of military prowess and diplomatic acumen, Cortés orchestrated the fall of the Aztec Empire, a monumental achievement that brought vast territories of present-day Mexico under the rule of the King of Castile. For his efforts, he was granted the title of marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, although the more prestigious title of viceroy was awarded to Antonio de Mendoza, a high-ranking nobleman.

In 1541, Cortés returned to Spain, where he lived for six more years before passing away from natural causes. His legacy as a conquistador and explorer remains a significant chapter in the history of Spanish colonization in the Americas.
