Herodian

Herodian, a notable historian and writer, was born around the year one hundred seventy. His significant contributions to historical literature are encapsulated in an extensive work comprising eight books, which chronicles the tumultuous years from one hundred eighty to two hundred thirty-eight. While his accounts are not universally regarded as entirely reliable, his portrayal of Emperor Elagabalus is often considered less biased and more insightful than that of his contemporary, Cassius Dio.

The precise origins of Herodian remain a subject of scholarly debate, with popular theories suggesting he hailed from regions such as Syria, Alexandria in Egypt, or Asia Minor. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his birthplace, it is evident that he spent a considerable portion of his life in Rome, where he likely did not hold any public office. His writings indicate that he was still active during the reign of Gordianus III, who ascended to the throne in two hundred thirty-eight, suggesting he lived to an advanced age.

Herodian himself claimed that the events he chronicled occurred during his lifetime, lending a personal touch to his historical narrative. The Byzantine scholar Photios I of Constantinople praised Herodian's style, describing it as clear, vigorous, and agreeable. He noted that Herodian struck a balance between artistic elegance and simplicity, avoiding both excessive ornamentation and starkness. Additionally, it appears that Herodian drew inspiration from Thucydides, emulating his style and structure while occasionally incorporating imaginary speeches into his historical accounts.
