Hicham El Guerrouj, born on September fourteenth, nineteen seventy-four, is a retired Moroccan middle-distance runner who has left an indelible mark on the world of athletics. Renowned for his exceptional talent, he holds the world record for both the 1500 metres and the mile, and he was once the world record holder in the 2000 metres. His remarkable achievements include being the only athlete since Paavo Nurmi to secure gold medals in both the 1500 m and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games.
El Guerrouj is often celebrated as the greatest middle-distance runner in history. As of October twenty twenty-four, he still holds six of the ten fastest times ever recorded in the 1500 m and seven of the fifteen fastest times in the mile. He shares a unique distinction with Jakob Ingebrigtsen as the only men to have broken the three minutes twenty-seven seconds barrier in the 1500 m and the three minutes forty-four seconds barrier in the mile. Notably, he remains the only athlete to have achieved a time under three minutes twenty-seven seconds in the 1500 m on five separate occasions.
Throughout his illustrious career, El Guerrouj won gold medals in the 1500 m at the World Athletics Championships in nineteen ninety-seven, nineteen ninety-nine, two thousand one, and two thousand three. His outstanding performances earned him the prestigious World Athlete of the Year award three times. In recognition of his contributions to athletics, he was inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Hall of Fame in November two thousand fourteen.
