Hieronymus Bosch

Hieronymus Bosch, born in the year fourteen fifty, was a distinguished Dutch painter hailing from Brabant. Renowned as one of the most significant figures of the Early Netherlandish painting school, Bosch's artistry primarily involved oil on oak wood, showcasing fantastical illustrations that delve into religious themes and narratives.

Despite the scarcity of information regarding his personal life, records indicate that Bosch spent the majority of his years in 's-Hertogenbosch, the town of his birth, where he resided in his grandfather's house. His ancestry traces back to Nijmegen and Aachen, a heritage reflected in his surname, Van Aken. His unique and imaginative style left a lasting impact on the northern art scene of the sixteenth century, with Pieter Bruegel the Elder being his most notable follower.

During his lifetime, Bosch's works were collected across the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and his macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell were particularly popular, leading to numerous copies of his art. Today, he is celebrated as a highly individualistic artist who provided profound insights into the complexities of human desires and fears.

Attribution of Bosch's works has proven challenging, with only approximately twenty-five paintings confidently identified as his, alongside eight drawings. Additionally, around half a dozen paintings are attributed to his workshop. Among his most acclaimed creations are three triptych altarpieces, with 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' standing out as a hallmark of his artistic legacy.
