Hilda Solis

Hilda Solis, born on October twentieth, nineteen fifty-seven, is a prominent American politician currently serving as a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the first district and as its Chair. Raised in La Puente, California, by immigrant farmers from Nicaragua and Mexico, Solis has dedicated her career to public service and advocacy for labor and environmental issues.

Her educational journey includes degrees from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and the University of Southern California. Solis began her political career in nineteen eighty-five when she was elected to the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees. She later served in the California State Assembly and the California State Senate, where she made history as the first Hispanic woman to hold a Senate seat.

In two thousand, Solis was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where she focused on labor rights and environmental justice. Her commitment to these causes led to her nomination by President Barack Obama as the twenty-fifth United States Secretary of Labor, a position she held from two thousand nine to two thousand thirteen, becoming the first Latina to lead a federal executive department.

After her tenure in Washington, D.C., Solis returned to her roots, winning a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in two thousand fourteen. As Supervisor, she has been instrumental in addressing critical issues such as gentrification and affordable housing, while also advocating for the cleanup of the Exide battery plant. Her leadership has been recognized through her unopposed re-election in two thousand eighteen and her service as county chair during multiple terms.
