Hildeprand

Hildeprand, often referred to as the Useless, was a significant figure in Lombard history, ascending to the throne around seven hundred thirty-five in partnership with his uncle, Liutprand. His lineage traced back to Sigiprand, the duke of Asti, and prior to his kingship, Hildeprand held the title of duke (dux). His early military endeavors included a notable role in the successful siege of Byzantine Ravenna in seven hundred thirty-four, a campaign that showcased his leadership skills.

Despite being elected king by the Lombard nobility during Liutprand's illness, Hildeprand's reign was marked by a complex relationship with his uncle. Liutprand, upon recovering, begrudgingly accepted Hildeprand as a co-ruler. This dynamic was reminiscent of the circumstances surrounding Liutprand's own election, which had occurred while his father was gravely ill. The political landscape of the time was heavily influenced by the nobility's decisions, reflecting the power struggles within the Lombard kingdom.

In the years that followed, Hildeprand's actions often put him at odds with both the Byzantine Empire and the Papacy. By seven hundred thirty-nine, while Liutprand was engaged in military campaigns against the church in the Duchy of Rome, Hildeprand was actively raiding ecclesiastical lands around Ravenna. His military exploits continued until seven hundred forty-three, when Liutprand's health began to decline again, leading to a shift in power dynamics within the kingdom.

Upon Liutprand's death in seven hundred forty-four, Hildeprand was elected unopposed in Pavia, marking a significant moment in his political career. However, his reign was short-lived, as he faced a revolt led by Ratchis, the duke of Friuli, who quickly sought peace with Pope Zachary. Hildeprand's legacy is one of ambition and conflict, illustrating the turbulent nature of Lombard rule during this era.
