Hind bint Utba

Hind bint Utba, born in the year five hundred eighty-four, was a prominent figure in early Islamic history, known for her dual roles as a poet and priest. She was the wife of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb and the mother of Mu'awiya I, a significant leader in the early Islamic caliphate.

Initially, Hind was an ardent opponent of the early Muslims and the Prophet Muhammad. Her fierce resistance was notable during the early years of Islam, particularly in the context of the conflicts that arose between the Quraysh and the Muslim community. However, her perspective shifted dramatically after the conquest of Mecca in six hundred thirty, leading to her conversion to Islam.

Hind's legacy is further enriched by her military contributions, especially at the Battle of Yarmuk, where she served under the caliph Umar ibn Khattab. Sunni Muslim sources commend her for her strategic prowess and leadership during this pivotal battle, highlighting her as a key figure in the expansion of the Islamic state.
