Hippodamus of Miletus

Hippodamus of Miletus, born in four hundred ninety-eight BC, was a pioneering figure in the realms of architecture, urban planning, and mathematics. Often hailed as the 'father of European urban planning', he introduced the innovative 'Hippodamian plan', a grid layout that sought to impose order and regularity on city designs. This approach stood in stark contrast to the chaotic layouts prevalent in many cities of his time, including Athens.

Raised in Miletus, Hippodamus was the son of Euryphon and lived during the dynamic fifth century BC. His contributions extended beyond urban planning; he was also recognized as a physician, meteorologist, and philosopher. Notably, Aristotle credited him as the first author to explore the theory of government, despite lacking practical experience in governance.

While the concept of rectangular city plans existed long before Hippodamus, his work significantly influenced the perception of urban design as a reflection of rational social order. His vision for cities was characterized by a systematic approach that aimed to enhance the quality of life for their inhabitants, laying the groundwork for future urban planning.
