Hirokazu Tanaka

Hirokazu Tanaka, born on December 13, 1957, is a renowned Japanese musician and composer, celebrated for his pioneering contributions to chiptune music. Known affectionately as Chip Tanaka, he made a significant impact as one of Nintendo's in-house composers during the iconic eight- and sixteen-bit eras of video gaming.

In addition to his musical talents, Tanaka played a crucial role in the design and programming of audio hardware for the Famicom and Game Boy. His innovative work extended to the development of several notable accessories, including the NES Zapper, Game Boy Camera, and Game Boy Printer, showcasing his multifaceted expertise in both music and technology.

Tanaka's impressive soundtrack credits include classics such as Metroid (1986), Kid Icarus (1986), Super Mario Land (1989), Tetris (1989), Mother (1989), Dr. Mario (1990), and EarthBound (1994). His compositions have left an indelible mark on the gaming industry, resonating with players around the world.

From 2001 until 2023, Tanaka served as the president and executive director of Creatures Inc., where he continued to influence the gaming landscape. After resigning from this role, he embraced a new position as Creative Fellow within the company, further solidifying his legacy in the world of video games.
