Hiroo Onoda

Hiroo Onoda, born on March 19, 1922, was a Japanese military officer who served as a second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. His story is one of remarkable endurance and dedication, as he became one of the last Japanese holdouts, continuing to fight for nearly twenty-nine years after the war officially ended in 1945.

Onoda's prolonged resistance took place on Lubang Island in the Philippines, where he initially held out with three other soldiers. Over the years, one surrendered in 1950, while two others were killed in 1954 and 1972. Despite receiving numerous flyers and letters from family members stating that the war was over, Onoda and his comrades remained unconvinced, surviving on wild fruits, game, and stolen rice, while engaging in shootouts with locals and police.

In 1974, Onoda's life took a significant turn when he was contacted by Japanese adventurer Norio Suzuki. However, it wasn't until he was formally relieved of duty by his former commanding officer, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, that he agreed to surrender. On March 10, 1974, Onoda finally laid down his arms and returned to Japan, where he was greeted with a hero's welcome.

Following his return, Onoda published an autobiography that chronicled his extraordinary experiences. He later moved to Brazil, where he became a cattle rancher. In 1984, he returned to Japan, where he lived until his passing on January 16, 2014, at the age of ninety-one.
