Hiroshi Yoshida

Hiroshi Yoshida, born on September nineteenth, eighteen seventy-six, was a prominent figure in the world of Japanese art during the twentieth century. Renowned as both a painter and a woodblock printmaker, he is celebrated alongside Hasui Kawase as one of the foremost artists of the shin-hanga style. His work is particularly distinguished by its breathtaking landscape prints, which capture the essence of both Japanese and international scenery.

Yoshida's artistic journey was marked by extensive travel across the globe, driven by a desire to explore diverse artistic expressions and to depict various landscapes. His travels took him to iconic locations such as the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps, and the Grand Canyon, where he skillfully rendered these non-Japanese subjects using traditional Japanese woodblock techniques.

In Japan, he earned the title of mountain painter (山岳画家), dedicating a significant portion of his year to sketching expeditions. His passion for mountain landscapes led him to establish the Nihon Sangakugaka Kyōkai, or Japan Mountain Painting Society, in his later years. Each summer, he would ascend the mountains of the Japanese Alps, drawing inspiration for his large paintings and woodblock prints upon his return home.
