Hisashi Kimura

Hisashi Kimura, born on September tenth, eighteen seventy, in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, was a distinguished Japanese astronomer whose contributions significantly advanced the field of astronomy.

Throughout his career, Kimura dedicated himself to the study and measurement of latitude variations, building upon the foundational work of Seth Carlo Chandler, the discoverer of the Chandler wobble. His expertise led him to become the inaugural director of the International Latitude Observatory at Mizusawa, Japan, in eighteen ninety-nine.

In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Kimura was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in nineteen thirty-six. The following year, he was among the first recipients of the Order of Culture, a testament to his influence and contributions to Japanese culture and science.

His legacy endures in the celestial realm, with the crater Kimura on the Moon and the asteroid 6233 Kimura named in his honor, celebrating his lasting impact on astronomy.
