Hissène Habré

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Hissène Habré

Hissène Habré, born on August thirteenth, nineteen forty-two, was a prominent Chadian politician and military figure who rose to power as the fifth president of Chad from nineteen eighty-two until his deposition in nineteen ninety. A member of the Toubou ethnic group, Habré initially joined the FROLINAT rebels during the first Chadian Civil War, opposing a government dominated by the southern regions of the country.

His political journey was marked by a series of alliances and betrayals, including a temporary defection to Felix Malloum's government before ultimately overthrowing Goukouni Oueddei in nineteen eighty-two. Once in power, Habré established the National Union for Independence and Revolution (UNIR) as the sole legal political party in Chad, solidifying his authoritarian rule.

Habré's presidency was characterized by severe human rights violations, orchestrated by his secret police, the Documentation and Security Directorate (DDS). His regime received backing from France and the United States, primarily due to his staunch opposition to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. He led Chad through the tumultuous Libyan-Chadian conflict, achieving a notable victory during the Toyota War from nineteen eighty-six to nineteen eighty-seven.

However, his rule came to an end in nineteen ninety when he was overthrown by Idriss Déby and subsequently fled to Senegal. In May twenty-sixteen, Habré was convicted of human rights abuses, including the ordering of killings and sexual violence, by an international tribunal in Senegal, marking a historic moment as he became the first former head of state to be tried for such crimes in another country. Habré passed away on August twenty-fourth, twenty twenty-one, after testing positive for COVID-19.
