Historical Jesus

The Historical Jesus is a figure whose life and teachings have been examined through critical historical methods, contrasting with traditional religious interpretations. Scholars widely accept that Jesus was a historical figure, dismissing the notion of him being a mythical entity as a fringe theory. The exploration of his existence is rooted in the cultural and historical contexts of his time, particularly the first century in Galilee.

Research into the Historical Jesus has evolved through three distinct scholarly quests since the eighteenth century, each developing unique criteria for understanding his life. While there is a general consensus on two pivotal events—his baptism and crucifixion—scholarly opinions diverge regarding his beliefs and teachings. This divergence reflects the complexity of reconstructing his image based on various sources, including the Pauline epistles and the gospels, alongside non-biblical references.

Jesus is often portrayed through multiple lenses: as an apocalyptic prophet, a charismatic healer, a Cynic philosopher, a Jewish messiah, a prophet of social change, and a rabbi. These portraits, while differing significantly from one another and from the gospel accounts, share overlapping attributes.
