Hito Steyerl

Hito Steyerl, born on January 1, 1966, in Munich, is a prominent German filmmaker and moving image artist known for her innovative approach to the essay documentary. Her work delves into the intricate relationships between media, technology, and the global circulation of images, making her a significant figure in contemporary visual culture.

Since 2024, Steyerl has held the position of professor of Current Digital Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Prior to this role, she was a professor of New Media Art at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she played a pivotal role in co-founding the Research Center for Proxy Politics alongside Vera Tollmann and Boaz Levin.
