Renowned as one of the most successful Tin Pan Alley songwriters during the 1930s and 1940s, he was a pioneer among singer-songwriters, skillfully utilizing emerging communication technologies such as radio, television, and sound recordings to reach a wider audience.

Throughout his illustrious career, Carmichael composed several hundred songs, with fifty achieving hit record status. His most celebrated works include four of the most-recorded American songs: 'Stardust' (nineteen twenty-seven), 'Georgia on My Mind' (nineteen thirty), 'The Nearness of You' (nineteen thirty-seven), and 'Heart and Soul' (nineteen thirty-eight).
