Holger Thiele

Holger Thiele, born on September twenty-fifth, eighteen seventy-eight, was a distinguished Danish American astronomer and a notable figure in the discovery of minor planets and comets. He was the son of Thorvald Nicolai Thiele, a prominent Danish astronomer, actuary, and mathematician, after whom the main-belt asteroid 1586 Thiele is named.

During the years nineteen fourteen to nineteen sixteen, Holger Thiele made significant contributions to astronomy, credited by the Minor Planet Center with the discovery of four numbered asteroids. His expertise extended to the discovery of the comet C/1906 V1, and he was instrumental in calculating the orbits of various other comets.

Thiele's career began at the Hamburg-Bergedorf Observatory in Hamburg, Germany, where he honed his skills in observational astronomy. In nineteen twelve, he made the pivotal decision to immigrate to the United States, seeking new opportunities in his field.

In nineteen seventeen, he joined the University of California at Lick Observatory, located near San Jose, California, as a fellow, furthering his research and contributions to the scientific community. Holger Thiele's life came to a close in Alameda County in nineteen forty-six, leaving behind a legacy of astronomical discoveries.
