Horace Walpole

Horace Walpole, born on September twenty-fourth, seventeen seventeen, was a prominent British Whig politician, writer, historian, and antiquarian. He is best remembered for his contributions to literature and his role in the revival of the Gothic architectural style, particularly through the construction of Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, southwest London.

Walpole's literary legacy is anchored by his groundbreaking work, The Castle of Otranto, published in seventeen sixty-four, which is recognized as the first Gothic novel. His extensive correspondence, compiled in a significant collection of letters, offers valuable insights into the social and political landscape of his time. These letters have been published by Yale University Press in forty-eight volumes, with a selected volume released in two thousand seventeen.

As the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, the first British prime minister, Horace ascended to the title of the fourth and last Earl of Orford following the death of his nephew in seventeen ninety-one. His life and works continue to be a subject of interest for scholars and enthusiasts of Gothic literature and British history.
