Hormuzd Rassam

Hormuzd Rassam, born in 1826, was a pioneering Assyriologist and archaeologist whose contributions to the field have left an indelible mark on the study of ancient Mesopotamia. His most notable achievements occurred between 1877 and 1882, during which he made significant archaeological discoveries, including the unearthing of clay tablets that contained the Epic of Gilgamesh, recognized as the world's oldest notable literature.

Rassam's journey began in the Ottoman Empire, where he is celebrated as the first-known Middle Eastern and Assyrian archaeologist. His passion for uncovering the past led him to emigrate to the United Kingdom, where he was naturalized as a British citizen and settled in Brighton. His expertise and dedication to archaeology were complemented by his role as a diplomat, where he represented the British government in efforts to secure the release of British diplomats held captive in Ethiopia.
