Houston, the most populous city in Texas and the Southern United States, boasts a vibrant population of two point three million as of the 2020 census. This dynamic city is the fourth-most populous in the United States and serves as the county seat of Harris County. Covering an expansive area of six hundred forty point four square miles, Houston is the ninth largest city in the nation and stands out as the largest city whose municipal government operates independently from a county, parish, or borough.

Founded on August thirtieth, eighteen thirty-six, at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou, Houston was incorporated as a city on June fifth, eighteen thirty-seven. Named after General Sam Houston, a pivotal figure in Texas's independence from Mexico, the city quickly evolved from a temporary capital of the Texas Republic into a thriving regional trading hub throughout the nineteenth century.

The twentieth century marked a period of rapid growth for Houston, driven by a combination of economic factors including the development of a major port and railroad industry, the decline of Galveston as Texas's primary port after a catastrophic hurricane in nineteen hundred, and the Texas oil boom. By the mid-twentieth century, Houston had diversified its economy, becoming home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions in the world, as well as NASA's Johnson Space Center, which houses the Mission Control Center.
