Howard Thayer Kingsbury Jr., affectionately known as "Ox," was born on September 11, 1904, in New York City. He grew up in Manhattan, where he resided in the Kingsbury house. His early education took place at Groton School, from which he graduated in 1922, laying the foundation for a life dedicated to athletics and academia.
Continuing his education at Yale University, Kingsbury made a significant mark as a member of the Yale eight rowing team, serving as the six-oar and also playing football. His leadership skills shone through as he captained the team, culminating in his graduation in 1926. His passion for rowing led him to further studies at The Queen's College, Oxford, where he continued to excel in the sport, rowing as the six-oar in the prestigious 79th Boat Race against Cambridge in 1927.
In 1924, Kingsbury achieved Olympic glory as part of the American Eights boat, which clinched the gold medal at the Summer Olympics held in Argenteuil/Paris, France. This remarkable accomplishment solidified his legacy in the world of rowing.
After a fulfilling life, Howard Kingsbury passed away on October 27, 1991, in Yarmouthport, Massachusetts. He left behind a legacy not only as an accomplished athlete but also as a devoted father to Nathaniel Wales Kingsbury, who was born on October 19, 1940, and passed away on November 9, 1998.
