Hrachia Acharian

Hrachia Acharian, born on March eighth, eighteen seventy-six, was a distinguished Armenian linguist, lexicographer, etymologist, and philologist. His early education took place in local Armenian schools in Istanbul, where he laid the foundation for his illustrious career. Acharian furthered his studies at the prestigious Sorbonne under the guidance of Antoine Meillet and at the University of Strasbourg with Heinrich Hübschmann.

Throughout his career, Acharian dedicated himself to teaching in various Armenian communities across the Russian Empire and Iran. In nineteen twenty-three, he settled in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, where he became a vital part of Yerevan State University until his passing. His commitment to the Armenian language and culture was unwavering.

Acharian was a true polyglot, known for compiling several significant dictionaries, including the monumental Armenian Etymological Dictionary. His extensive research into Armenian dialects and his cataloging of Armenian manuscripts contributed greatly to the field of linguistics. He also authored comprehensive studies on the history of the Armenian language and its alphabet, earning him the title of the father of Armenian linguistics.
