Hrvoje Šarinić

Hrvoje Šarinić, born on February seventeenth, nineteen thirty-five in Sušak, was a prominent Croatian politician and architect. He graduated from the University of Zagreb, specializing in architecture, construction, and geodesy. His career took a significant turn when he spent twenty-four years in Paris, France, where he also held dual citizenship.

Upon returning to Croatia after the first democratic elections, Šarinić joined the government of Franjo Tuđman, initially serving as the head of Tuđman's personal office. In the wake of the parliamentary elections in nineteen ninety-two, he was appointed Prime Minister as a member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). His administration focused primarily on domestic issues, particularly the privatization of state-owned companies, during a tumultuous period marked by economic decline and war.

Šarinić's tenure as Prime Minister was fraught with challenges, including the controversial takeover of Slobodna Dalmacija in early nineteen ninety-three. His popularity waned significantly, culminating in the rejection of HDZ in his native Primorje-Gorski Kotar County during local elections. In April nineteen ninety-three, he was replaced by Nikica Valentić, yet he remained a close advisor to Tuđman and took on the role of head of Croatian security services.

Throughout his career, Šarinić was involved in diplomatic missions, notably negotiating with Slobodan Milošević. His remarks regarding the outcomes of the Yugoslav wars sparked considerable controversy. In nineteen ninety-five, he represented the government in the Erdut Agreement. However, by nineteen ninety-eight, after publicly criticizing a high-ranking HDZ politician, he resigned from his position when Tuđman sided with the politician. He later joined the newly formed Democratic Centre in two thousand.

Hrvoje Šarinić passed away on July twenty-first, two thousand seventeen, in Zagreb at the age of eighty-two. He was laid to rest at Mirogoj on July twenty-six, five days after his death.
