Hubert Wilkins

Sir George Hubert Wilkins, born on 31 October 1888, was a remarkable Australian explorer whose diverse talents spanned across various fields including ornithology, photography, and aviation. Known affectionately as Captain Wilkins, he made significant contributions to polar exploration and was a pioneer in demonstrating the capabilities of submarines beneath the polar ice cap.

During World War I, Wilkins showcased his leadership skills when he commanded a group of American soldiers at the Battle of the Hindenburg Line, earning him the Military Cross and Bar. This honor made him the only official Australian photographer from any war to receive a combat medal, highlighting his unique role in documenting the realities of war.

Wilkins's adventurous spirit led him to attempt the first crossing under the North Pole in a submarine, a mission that, while unsuccessful, proved the feasibility of such operations. His groundbreaking work laid the foundation for future successful missions in polar exploration.

After his passing on 30 November 1958, the US Navy honored his legacy by taking his ashes to the North Pole aboard the submarine USS Skate on 17 March 1959, a fitting tribute to a man whose life was dedicated to exploration and discovery.
