Hugh the Black

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Hugh the Black

Hugh the Black, born in the year eight hundred ninety-one, was a prominent aristocrat who held the title of Duke of Burgundy from nine hundred twenty-three until his death in nine hundred fifty-two. He was a member of the Bosonid family, being the son of Richard of Autun, the duke of Burgundy, and Adelaide of Auxerre. Hugh succeeded his elder brother Rudolph, who was elected king of West Francia, thereby inheriting the duchy.

After Rudolph's passing in nine hundred thirty-six, Hugh's ambitions may have led him to contest the legitimacy of Louis IV as king of West Francia. This defiance resulted in a military response from Louis, who dispatched Hugh the Great to capture key territories such as Auxerre and Sens. Consequently, the Duchy of Burgundy was divided between Hugh the Great and Hugh the Black, marking a significant moment in the region's political landscape.

Despite his noble status and the power he wielded, little is known about Hugh's personal life, including whether he ever married. It is widely believed that he died without any living descendants, as he was succeeded by Gilbert of Chalon, who assumed control of the Duchy of Burgundy in a de facto capacity, although he was not officially recognized as duke.
