Hughie Lehman

Hughie Lehman, born on October twenty-seventh, eighteen eighty-five, was a distinguished Canadian professional ice hockey player known for his exceptional skills as a goaltender. He began his career with the Pembroke Lumber Kings and the Berlin Dutchmen, showcasing his talent early on.

In nineteen eleven, Lehman made a significant move to the New Westminster Royals, where he played for three seasons. His journey continued in nineteen fourteen when he joined the Vancouver Millionaires, where he spent half of his impressive twenty-two-year professional career. During his time with Vancouver, he achieved the pinnacle of success by winning his only Stanley Cup, although he faced disappointment in seven other attempts.

Lehman’s career took another turn in nineteen twenty-six when he joined the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played a full season there and split his second season between playing and coaching. Notably, Lehman was a pioneer in goaltending, being one of the first to regularly pass the puck to his teammates, a practice often attributed to Jacques Plante. He even made history by scoring a goal while playing for the Professionals.

His contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in nineteen fifty-eight, solidifying his legacy in the world of ice hockey.
