Huguette Gaulin

Huguette Gaulin Bergeron, born in nineteen forty-four, was a remarkable French Canadian poet, writer, and novelist whose life was marked by both artistic brilliance and profound tragedy. Her literary contributions captured the essence of human emotion and the beauty of the world around her, resonating deeply with her audience.

Tragically, Huguette's life came to a heartbreaking end on June sixth, nineteen seventy-two, when she committed suicide through self-immolation in the bustling Place Jacques-Cartier, located in the Old Port of Montreal. In her final moments, she passionately declared, 'Vous avez détruit la beauté du monde!' which translates to 'You have destroyed the beauty of the world!' This poignant statement reflects her deep disillusionment and the weight of her artistic vision.

Her untimely death left a significant impact on the cultural landscape of Quebec. In tribute to her life and work, renowned French-Canadian lyricist Luc Plamondon was inspired to compose a hymn in her honor. Titled 'Hymne à la beauté du monde,' this piece has been performed by numerous celebrated artists, including Diane Dufresne, Isabelle Boulay, Garou, and Éric Lapointe, ensuring that Huguette's legacy continues to resonate through music.
