Hunter A. Tootoo, born on August 18, 1963, is a prominent Canadian figure known for his multifaceted career as a politician, entrepreneur, civil servant, and businessperson. He made significant contributions to Canadian politics, particularly as the Member of Parliament for Nunavut from 2015 to 2019. Elected as a Liberal, Tootoo was appointed Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shortly after his election.
Despite his promising start, Tootoo faced personal challenges that led to his resignation from the ministerial position on May 31, 2016. He took a leave from Parliament to undergo a two-month treatment program for alcohol addiction, demonstrating his commitment to personal recovery. Following this period, he served as an independent member for the remainder of the 42nd Parliament and chose not to seek re-election in 2019.
Before his tenure in federal politics, Tootoo was an influential figure in the Nunavut Legislative Assembly, representing the Iqaluit Centre riding from 1999 to 2013. His leadership skills were recognized when he served as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2013. Initially a member of the New Democratic Party from 1997 to 1999, Tootoo's political journey reflects his dedication to serving his community.
In addition to his political career, Tootoo is an accomplished athlete, having represented Nunavut multiple times at the Canadian Curling Club Championships. His passion for the sport led him to become the president of the territorial curling association in 2020, further solidifying his commitment to promoting curling in his region.
