Hypereides

Hypereides, born in the year three hundred ninety BC, was a prominent Athenian logographer, orator, and politician. Renowned for his eloquence and persuasive skills, he played a significant role in the political landscape of ancient Athens. His contributions to the art of rhetoric earned him a place among the ten Attic orators recognized in the esteemed Alexandrian canon, a compilation by Aristophanes of Byzantium and Aristarchus of Samothrace.

As a staunch advocate for Athenian independence, Hypereides emerged as a leader in the resistance against the encroaching power of King Philip II of Macedon and his son, Alexander the Great. He was instrumental in rallying support against pro-Macedonian sympathizers within Athens, working alongside notable figures such as Lycurgus and Demosthenes.

One of his most notable legal battles was the prosecution of Philippides of Paiania, who was accused of promoting pro-Macedonian policies. Hypereides' commitment to Athenian sovereignty was further exemplified by his efforts to honor Alexander the Great, showcasing the complex interplay of admiration and resistance that characterized his political stance.
