I. A. Richards

Ivor Armstrong Richards, known as I. A. Richards, was born on February 26, 1893, in England. He emerged as a prominent figure in the realms of education, literary criticism, and philosophy. His intellectual journey led him to become a key proponent of New Criticism, a movement that revolutionized literary theory by advocating for the close reading of texts, particularly poetry, to uncover their intrinsic aesthetic qualities.

Richards' contributions to literary methodology are encapsulated in several influential works. His collaboration with C. K. Ogden on 'The Meaning of Meaning: A Study of the Influence of Language upon Thought and of the Science of Symbolism' in 1923 laid the groundwork for understanding the interplay between language and thought. Following this, his own publications, including 'Principles of Literary Criticism' in 1924 and 'Practical Criticism' in 1929, further solidified his reputation as a leading literary theorist.
