Iain Rankin, born on April ninth, nineteen eighty-three, is a prominent Canadian politician known for his leadership within the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. He represents the Timberlea-Prospect electoral district in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, where he has been a dedicated member since his election in the two thousand thirteen general election. Rankin's political journey has seen him re-elected in the subsequent elections of two thousand seventeen, two thousand twenty-one, and two thousand twenty-four.
On February sixth, two thousand twenty-one, Rankin was appointed as the Leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party following a competitive leadership race. Just a few weeks later, on February twenty-third, he took office as the twenty-ninth premier of Nova Scotia. His tenure, however, was brief, as he called for an election on August seventeenth, two thousand twenty-one, which resulted in a loss to the Progressive Conservative Party led by Tim Houston. Rankin stepped down from the premiership on August thirty-first, two thousand twenty-one.
Following his time as premier, Rankin transitioned to serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. On January fifth, two thousand twenty-two, he announced his intention to resign as leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party once a successor was chosen. His leadership was succeeded by Zach Churchill in the two thousand twenty-two leadership election.
Rankin is recognized as one of the longest-serving current members of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia, alongside MLAs John Lohr, Brendan Maguire, and current premier Tim Houston, all of whom were first elected in the two thousand thirteen provincial election.
