Ibn Hawqal

Muḥammad Abū’l-Qāsim Ibn Ḥawqal, born in the year nine hundred and forty-three in Nisibis, Upper Mesopotamia, was a prominent Arab Muslim merchant, geographer, and writer of the tenth century. His extensive travels, which spanned from the year nine hundred and forty-three to nine hundred and sixty-nine, allowed him to gather a wealth of knowledge about the regions he explored.

Among his notable contributions to geography and literature is his celebrated work, Surat al-Ard, completed in the year nine hundred and seventy-seven. This text, which translates to 'The Face of the Earth,' serves as a significant chronicle of the geographical and cultural landscapes of his time, reflecting his keen observations and insights.

Despite the passage of time, Ibn Hawqal's legacy endures, with his writings providing invaluable perspectives on the world as it was known in the tenth century. His death is recorded to have occurred after the year three hundred and sixty-eight AH, or nine hundred and seventy-eight AD, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to exploration and scholarship.
