Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir, born in the year 1301 in Bostra, Mamluk Sultanate, now part of modern-day Syria, was a prominent figure in Islamic scholarship. Renowned as a Muhaddith, Islamic jurist, mufassir, historian, and exegete, he made significant contributions to Sunni Islam, particularly in the fields of tafsir and historical writing.

His education was shaped by notable scholars, including al-Dhahabi and Ibn Taymiyya, whose methodologies greatly influenced his work. Among his most celebrated writings is the fourteen-volume universal history titled al-Bidaya wa'l-Nihaya, which reflects his comprehensive approach to historical narrative.

Ibn Kathir's tafsir, known as Tafsir Ibn Kathir, is particularly esteemed for its critical examination of Israʼiliyyat—stories derived from non-Muslim traditions such as those of Jewish, Christian, or Zoroastrian origins. This critical approach has garnered recognition among Western Muslims and Wahhabi scholars alike.

Adhering to the Athari school of Islamic theology, Ibn Kathir emphasized strict textualism in interpreting the Quran and hadith, setting his work apart from earlier exegetes like Tabari. His legacy continues to influence Islamic thought and scholarship today.
