He has established himself as a significant voice in the discourse surrounding Islamic history and theology, particularly through his role as the founder of the Institute for the Secularisation of Islamic Society. His academic journey includes a tenure as a senior research fellow at the Center for Inquiry, where he focused on Quranic criticism.

Adopting the pen name Ibn Warraq in nineteen ninety-five, he sought to protect his personal safety while engaging in controversial discussions about Islam. The name, which translates to 'son of a papermaker,' is a nod to the ninth-century scholar Abu Isa al-Warraq, a figure known for his skepticism. Warraq's decision to use a pseudonym was influenced by his fear of facing repercussions similar to those experienced by Salman Rushdie.

Warraq's literary contributions include several historiographies that challenge mainstream narratives of early Islamic history.
