Ibn Zuhr

Abū Marwān ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Zuhr, known in the Latinized form as Avenzoar, was a prominent Arab physician, surgeon, and poet born in Seville in the year one thousand ninety-one. His contributions to medicine during the twelfth century positioned him as one of the most esteemed medical figures of his time, alongside contemporaries such as Averroes and Ibn Tufail.

Ibn Zuhr was particularly noted for advocating a rational and empirical approach to medicine, which was a significant departure from the prevailing practices of his era. His seminal work, Al-Taysīr fil-Mudāwāt wal-Tadbīr, translated into both Latin and Hebrew, played a crucial role in advancing surgical techniques and medical knowledge. This influential text provided insights into various diseases and their treatments, marking a pivotal moment in the history of medicine.

Among his notable achievements, Ibn Zuhr is credited with performing the first experimental tracheotomy on a goat, showcasing his innovative spirit and dedication to medical experimentation. Additionally, he is recognized for his early descriptions of bezoar stones, which he identified as having medicinal properties, further illustrating his commitment to exploring the therapeutic potential of natural substances.
