Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Idi Amin

Idi Amin, born in 1925 to a Kakwa father and a Lugbara mother, emerged as a prominent figure in Uganda's military and political landscape. His journey began in 1946 when he joined the King's African Rifles, part of the British Colonial Army, initially serving as a cook. Through dedication and skill, he ascended to the rank of lieutenant, participating in significant military actions, including those against Somali rebels and during the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya.

Following Uganda's independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, Amin continued his military career, becoming deputy army commander in 1964 and later commander in 1966. His rise to power culminated in 1971 when he overthrew President Milton Obote, declaring himself president and establishing a dictatorial regime marked by severe human rights abuses and economic collapse.

Amin's rule was characterized by shifting alliances, initially enjoying support from Western nations and Israel before aligning with leaders like Libya's Muammar Gaddafi and the Soviet Union. His administration was notorious for the expulsion of Asian communities in 1972, leading to strained diplomatic relations with India. Despite his initial popularity, increasing unrest and international condemnation marked the latter years of his rule.

In 1978, Amin's attempt to annex Tanzania's Kagera Region provoked a military response from Tanzania, resulting in his ousting in 1979. Following his exile, he lived in Libya, Iraq, and ultimately Saudi Arabia until his death in 2003. His legacy remains controversial, with estimates of up to five hundred thousand lives lost during his regime, earning him the grim title of 'The Butcher of Uganda.'
