Idriss Déby

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Idriss Déby

Idriss Déby, born on June eighteenth, nineteen fifty-two, was a prominent Chadian politician and military officer who served as the sixth president of Chad from nineteen ninety-one until his untimely death in twenty twenty-one. His remarkable thirty-year tenure made him the longest-serving president in the history of Chad.

A member of the Bidayat clan of the Zaghawa ethnic group, Déby rose to prominence as a high-ranking commander in President Hissène Habré's military during the nineteen eighties. He played a crucial role in the Toyota War, contributing to Chad's victory in the Chadian-Libyan War. However, his relationship with Habré soured, leading to his exile in Libya after being purged on suspicion of plotting a coup.

In December nineteen ninety, Déby seized power through a coup d'état against Habré, initially serving as transitional president before being officially proclaimed president on February twenty-eighth, nineteen ninety-one. Although he introduced a multi-party system in nineteen ninety-two, his party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), remained the dominant force throughout his presidency. Déby won presidential elections in nineteen ninety-six, two thousand one, and after the elimination of term limits, he secured victories in two thousand six, two thousand eleven, two thousand sixteen, and two thousand twenty-one.

During his rule, Déby faced numerous challenges, including rebellions and coup attempts, notably from his former defense minister Youssouf Togoïmi and a civil war provoked by the War in Darfur. His administration was marked by allegations of authoritarianism, democratic backsliding, and widespread corruption. In April twenty twenty-one, the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) launched the Northern Chad offensive, during which Déby was injured while commanding troops and tragically passed away the following day.
