Ignatius Aphrem II

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ignatius Aphrem II

Ignatius Aphrem II, born on May third, nineteen sixty-five, is a prominent Syrian-American Christian prelate who has been serving as the Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church since May twenty-nine, two thousand fourteen. His early life in Qamishili, Syria, laid the foundation for a dedicated spiritual journey that began when he became a monk in nineteen eighty-five.

After his monastic initiation, he was ordained as a deacon and subsequently as a priest. His academic pursuits in theology led him to the Coptic Theological Seminary in Cairo, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Divinity in nineteen eighty-eight. He furthered his education with a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in nineteen ninety-two and a Doctor of Divinity from St Patrick's College in Ireland in nineteen ninety-four.

In nineteen ninety-six, he was consecrated as the Patriarchal Vicar and Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archdiocese for the Eastern United States by Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. During his tenure as archbishop, he was instrumental in establishing eleven new parishes, increasing the total to twenty, and he founded the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocesan Youth Organization to enhance youth engagement across the archdiocese.

Upon becoming Patriarch, he adopted the name Ignatius, marking a significant moment in the church's history as he became the second patriarch to carry the monastic name Aphrem, following Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem Barsoum. Notably, unlike his predecessors, he chose not to include his family name, Karim, in his official title, signifying a shift in tradition.
