Ignatius Zakka I

Ignatius Zakka I, born on April twenty-first, nineteen thirty-three, was a prominent Eastern Orthodox priest and writer, serving as the 122nd reigning Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. He was enthroned on September fourteenth, nineteen eighty, at St. George's Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus, succeeding Ignatius Ya`qub III. Embracing the traditional episcopal name Severios, he became known as Mor Severios Zakka.

Throughout his tenure, Zakka was deeply committed to ecumenical dialogue, holding the position of president of the World Council of Churches. His dedication to fostering unity among Christian denominations was evident during his time as an observer at the Second Vatican Council, prior to his appointment as metropolitan bishop of Mosul. At the time of his election as patriarch, he was serving as the archbishop of Baghdad and Basra.

As patriarch, Zakka made significant contributions to the church, including the establishment of a monastic seminary and the installation of numerous metropolitans, such as Baselios Thomas I as Catholicos of India. His meeting with Pope John Paul II during the Roman Pope's visit to Syria in two thousand one marked a notable moment in his leadership. He celebrated his Silver Jubilee in two thousand five, reflecting on a fruitful ministry.

Sadly, Ignatius Zakka I was admitted to a hospital in Germany for angioplasty on February twentieth, two thousand fourteen, and passed away on March twenty-first, two thousand fourteen, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual leadership and commitment to the Christian faith.
