Igor Dodon, born on February eighteenth, nineteen seventy-five, is a prominent Moldovan politician, economist, and lecturer. He made history by serving as the fifth president of Moldova from two thousand sixteen to two thousand twenty. Following his presidential term, he took on the role of leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova in two thousand twenty-four.
Before ascending to the presidency, Dodon held the position of Minister of Economy and Trade in the governments of Vasile Tarlev and Zinaida Greceanîi from September two thousand six to September two thousand nine. His political career also includes a significant tenure as a member of the Parliament of Moldova from two thousand nine until two thousand sixteen.
In the two thousand twenty presidential election, Dodon faced Maia Sandu, the candidate he had previously defeated in two thousand sixteen. However, he lost his bid for re-election, marking a significant shift in Moldovan politics.
On May twenty-four, two thousand twenty-two, Dodon was arrested by Moldovan authorities on serious charges, including passive corruption and high treason. Allegations surfaced that he received funds from fugitive politician Vladimir Plahotniuc to influence criminal cases in Russia. Following his arrest, he was placed under house arrest on May twenty-six to facilitate an ongoing investigation. The United States Department of the Treasury has also implicated him in corruption and election interference.
After several months, Dodon was released from house arrest on November eighteenth, two thousand twenty-two, pending a court trial regarding the various charges against him.
