He has dedicated nineteen years to the NBA, primarily as an assistant coach, and briefly served as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns for an entire season.

His coaching journey includes a notable season in Turkey with Fenerbahçe, after which he returned to the NBA to join the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach in twenty twenty-one. Kokoškov's pioneering spirit is evident as he became the first European to hold a full-time assistant coaching position in NCAA Division I college basketball and the first non-American to achieve such a role in the NBA.

In two thousand four, he made history by becoming the first non-American assistant coach to win an NBA championship and was also part of an NBA All-Star Game coaching staff.
