Ihor Kolomoyskyi, born on February 13, 1963, is a prominent Ukrainian-born Israeli billionaire businessman, recognized as one of Ukraine's leading oligarchs. His entrepreneurial journey began in the waning years of Soviet Ukraine, and by 2010, he was ranked as the second richest individual in the country, with significant influence over various sectors.
In 1992, Kolomoyskyi co-founded PrivatBank, which became a cornerstone of his business empire, known as Privat Group. His ventures extended into extensive media holdings, solidifying his status as a key player in Ukraine's economic landscape. From 2014 to 2016, he served as the Governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a role that ended with his dismissal by President Petro Poroshenko amid rising tensions.
Kolomoyskyi's political influence was notably evident in 2019 when his media resources and financial backing played a crucial role in Volodymyr Zelenskyy's presidential campaign, leading to the ousting of Poroshenko. However, his fortunes took a turn when, in 2020, he faced indictment in the United States for large-scale bank fraud, followed by a ban from entering the country in 2021 due to allegations of corruption.
In 2022, Zelenskyy reportedly revoked Kolomoyskyi's Ukrainian citizenship, and many of his assets, deemed strategically important amid the Russian invasion, were nationalized. The following year, he was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine on charges of money laundering and fraud, marking a significant chapter in his tumultuous career.
