Iker Martínez de Lizarduy, born on June sixteenth, nineteen seventy-seven, is a distinguished Basque Spanish sailor renowned for his exceptional achievements in competitive sailing. He first gained international acclaim when he clinched a gold medal in the 49er class at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, alongside his sailing partner, Xabier Fernández. This remarkable duo continued to showcase their prowess by securing a silver medal at the subsequent 2008 Summer Olympics.
In addition to his Olympic success, Martínez de Lizarduy has made significant contributions to team sailing events. He served as the skipper for Team Telefónica during the 2011-2012 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, with Fernández also on the team. Their outstanding performance earned them the prestigious title of ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year in 2011, a recognition they received while competing in the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.
Martínez de Lizarduy's sailing career continued to flourish as he took the helm of the Spanish yacht MAPFRE in the 2014-2015 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. However, he strategically skipped several legs of the race to focus on his preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics. His dedication to the sport is further highlighted by his early achievements, including winning his first medal in the 49er World Championships.
