Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar, born on October fourth, nineteen eighty-two, is a prominent American politician who has made history as the U.S. representative for Minnesota's fifth congressional district since two thousand nineteen. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from two thousand seventeen to two thousand nineteen, representing a portion of Minneapolis. Her congressional district encompasses all of Minneapolis and several of its first-ring suburbs.

As deputy chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Omar has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, including a fifteen dollar minimum wage, universal healthcare, and student loan debt forgiveness. She has also championed the protection of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and has called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Her stance on foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel, has drawn significant attention; she supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and has criticized Israel's settlement policies and military actions in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Omar's groundbreaking role in Congress is underscored by her status as the first Somali American and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota. Alongside Rashida Tlaib, she is one of the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress.
