Ilia Chavchavadze

Ilia Chavchavadze, born on October twenty-seventh, eighteen thirty-seven, was a pivotal figure in Georgian history, renowned for his multifaceted contributions as a journalist, poet, writer, and philosopher. He played a crucial role in the revival of Georgian nationalism during the latter half of the nineteenth century, a time marked by Tsarist rule. His efforts earned him the titles of Georgia's 'most universally revered hero' and the 'Father of the Nation.'

As a leader of the contemporary youth intellectual movement known as 'Tergdaleulebi,' Chavchavadze championed modern and European liberal ideals, significantly influencing the cultural landscape of Georgia. He was instrumental in founding two modern newspapers, 'Sakartvelos Moambe' and 'Iveria,' which served as platforms for his progressive ideas and the promotion of national identity.

Chavchavadze is perhaps best remembered for coining the phrase 'Ena, Mamuli, Sartsmunoeba' ('Language, Homeland, Faith'), which became a rallying cry for Georgian nationalism. Following the 1905 Russian Revolution, he was elected as a representative of the Georgian nobility to the imperial State Council, further solidifying his political influence.

Tragically, his life was cut short when he was assassinated by a gang of attackers in Tsitsamuri, near Mtskheta, on September twelfth, nineteen hundred and seven. In recognition of his enduring legacy, he was canonized as Saint Ilia the Righteous by the Georgian Orthodox Church, ensuring that his contributions to the nation would be remembered for generations to come.
