Ilir Meta, born on March twenty-four, nineteen sixty-nine, is a prominent Albanian politician and diplomat who has played a significant role in the country's political landscape. He served as the President of Albania from two thousand fifteen to two thousand twenty-two, marking a notable chapter in his extensive political career.
Before ascending to the presidency, Meta held various key positions, including Prime Minister from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand two and Speaker of the Parliament from two thousand thirteen to two thousand seventeen. His political journey also includes serving as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Economy, Trade, and Energy. In two thousand four, he founded the Socialist Movement for Integration, further solidifying his influence in Albanian politics.
On April twenty-eight, two thousand seventeen, Meta was elected President, receiving eighty-seven votes from the one hundred forty Members of Parliament. However, his presidency faced challenges, and on June ninth, two thousand twenty-one, he became the first Albanian president to be impeached by parliament, with a vote of one hundred four to seven. This unprecedented event was later overturned by the Constitutional Court on February sixteenth, two thousand twenty-two, which ruled that the accusations against him did not violate the constitution.
