Ilona Zrínyi

Ilona Zrínyi, born in 1643 in Ozalj, was a remarkable noblewoman and politician, known for her indomitable spirit and heroic actions. As a member of the esteemed Croatian-Hungarian Zrinski/Zrínyi family, she was the daughter of Petar Zrinski, the Ban of Croatia, and the niece of notable figures such as Miklós Zrínyi and Fran Krsto Frankopan.

Her life was marked by significant alliances, including her marriages to Francis Rákóczi I and Imre Thököly, and she was the mother of Francis Rákóczi II. Ilona's legacy is particularly defined by her courageous defense of Palanok Castle from the Imperial army between 1685 and 1688, an act that solidified her status as a heroine in Hungarian history.
